closed Looking at the shutters in place the fact that they opened and closed  suggested the image of a book opening and closing. The long rectangular shapes further reminded me of the spines of books on a shelf. The idea that the shutters had to be 'closed' in order to see the pictures painted on them seemed to agree with the concept that, in order to read a book, one has to close out the rest of the world.
These  paintings would not be continually on display so they could be  more demanding and  expressive than usual .
The  panels were stripped and primed with a number of coats of  white gesso  then  taken down and transported to my studio at home.
